Tanzanian President John Magufuli has died, the country’s vice president announced, after weeks of uncertainty over his health and whereabouts.
In a televised address to the nation late on Wednesday, Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan said the 61-year-old president had died of a “heart condition”, which he had suffered for 10 years at a hospital in Dar-Es-Salaam.
Over the last few days, questions over the health of the Tanzania leader have been a topic of discussion of the Tanzanian leader with the Tanzanian government on occasion refuting claims that the president was sick with covid-19.
It was rumored that the president was admitted at the Nairobi hospital in Kenya once his condition got worse, before being flown to India in a ventilator.
The president has been the key face of defiance against coronavirus, declaring earlier in the pandemic that his country was coronavirus free.
He even cautioned his citizens not to wear masks or observe social distancing.
