Siaya County becomes the first county to pass the BBI referendum bill

Siaya County Assembly has passed the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Constitutional Amendment Bill. THe county, becomes the first county to pass the referendum bill after the signature verification bill was concluded by IEBC.

Members of the county assembly Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) led residents in public hearings on Tuesday. The draft Bill has already been subjected to public participation in all the six sub-counties of Siaya.

On Tuesday, ODM party leader Raila Odinga it was just right for President Uhuru Kenyatta to grant the MCAs a 2Million car grant based on the fact that even MPs get a 7Million car grant from the government. “If the MPs receive a Sh.7 million car grant, why should it be a crime to do the same for MCAs?” the former premier posed.

The president, while meeting MCAs drawn from the Mt Kenya region at Sagana state lounge made a commitment to ensure that the ward representatives get the Sh2 million grant. This, some people argued was the condition given by the MCAs for them to pass the BBI bill.

The constitutional amendments bill now requires support from 23 more counties for it to sail through and be tabled for debate parliament and the senate
