Invest more in technical and vocational skills: Chuka University VC prof Njoka

Chuka University Vice Chancellor professor Erastus Njoka has urged Tharaka-nithi County leadership to invest more in empowering locals with technical skills in order to meet the growing demand of these important skills locally and nationally.

Addressing parents, pupils and past beneficially of DORCAS international, an NGO that has for years been offering educational sponsorships for disadvantaged children, the chuka VC stressed that where as most institutions have focused on offering university education in various fields to qualified students, the demand for technical skills such as masons, plumbers, electricians has grown tremendously as more construction activities being undertaken throughout the country have increased, yet the number of qualified technicians has not been able to meet this growing demand as students tend to ignore them.

According to the VC, the large number of students who do not join high-school or who do not proceed to colleges or university form a fertile labor force that can be harnessed and empowered with these skills for the betterment of the local community as well as improving the living standards of individuals and families.

“It is sad that even here at Chuka university where we are employing over 2000 technicians including masons, electricians and plumbers every day, the local youths are not able to benefit from these jobs because a majority don’t have these much needed skills” the VC said.

The VC opined that the county already has three technical institutions established by the national government several years ago and what is needed is to equip them, but instead, these institutions remained idle or with no necessary equipments to support the technical skills they are supposed to offer to the students.

“We need to empower the local youths with the essential skills so that they do not grow dependent on the 100 shillings they are given by politicians so that they can vote for them, that way, we are able to grow as a community.

On development, the Chuka university vc urged the local leaders to engage the local community members in the initiation of projects and ensure that the residents get value for their money in all the investments that the county government undertakes.

Speaking during the same event, local MCA Hon. Dennis Mutwiri thanked the foundation for the role that it has played in supporting underprivileged children acquire education. He pledged to personally support the initiative in order to ensure that it continues to achieve its objectives as education is a key pillar in empowerment of the local community.

Speakers during the event lauded the mca for heeding to the call and supporting them whenever they have called on him.

The speakers so urged the Chuka VC to go for the gubernatorial seat upon the end of his tenure as the VC in order to rescue the county from years of mismanagement and corruption.

They thanked him for the transformation he had brought to the local community by overseeing the establishment of Chuka University and modeling it one of the largest and best universities in the country.

Through the university, the local road and water infrastructures have improved and revived Chuka town which to them was slowly dying.
